چکیده

[1] High-resolution infrared radiance spectra obtained from near nadir observations provide atmospheric, surface, and cloud property information. A fast radiative transfer model, including cloud effects, is used for atmospheric profile and cloud parameter retrieval. The retrieval algorithm is presented along with its application to recent field experiment data from the NPOESS Airborne Sounder Testbed – Interferometer (NAST-I). The retrieval accuracy dependence on cloud properties is discussed. It is shown that relatively accurate temperature and moisture retrievals can be achieved below optically thin clouds. For optically thick clouds, accurate temperature and moisture profiles down to cloud top level are obtained. For both optically thin and thick cloud situations, the cloud top height can be retrieved with an accuracy of approximately 1.0 km. Preliminary NAST-I retrieval results from the recent Atlantic-THORPEX Regional Campaign (ATReC) are presented and compared with coincident observations obtained from dropsondes and the nadir-pointing Cloud Physics Lidar (CPL). Jp2.4 Retrieval of Cloud Optical Properties from Infrared Hyper-spectral Measurements: a New Methodology Based on Line-by-line Multiple Scattering Code and Measured Particles Size Distributions

1. ABSTRACT A new methodology to retrieve cloud optical properties using hyper-spectral infrared measurements is presented. The new method makes use of line by line multiple scattering (LbLMS) simulations to retrieve spectrally resolved cloud optical depths from spectral radiance data. The retrieval requires knowledge of the clear sky profile and cloud boundaries. The cloud microphysical proper...

Physically Retrieving Cloud and Thermodynamic Parameters from Ultraspectral IR Measurements

A physical inversion scheme has been developed dealing with cloudy as well as cloud-free radiance observed with ultraspectral infrared sounders to simultaneously retrieve surface, atmospheric thermodynamic, and cloud microphysical parameters. A fast radiative transfer model, which applies to the clouded atmosphere, is used for atmospheric profile and cloud parameter retrieval. A one-dimensional...

A spectral method for discriminating thermodynamic phase and retrieving cloud optical thickness and effective radius using transmitted solar radiance spectra

A new retrieval scheme for cloud optical thickness, effective radius, and thermodynamic phase was developed for ground-based measurements of cloud shortwave solar spectral transmittance. Fifteen parameters were derived to quantify spectral variations in shortwave transmittance due to absorption and scattering of liquid water and ice clouds, manifested by shifts in spectral slopes, curvatures, m...

An efficient method for cloud detection based on the feature-level fusion of Landsat-8 OLI spectral bands in deep convolutional neural network

Cloud segmentation is a critical pre-processing step for any multi-spectral satellite image application. In particular, disaster-related applications e.g., flood monitoring or rapid damage mapping, which are highly time and data-critical, require methods that produce accurate cloud masks in a short time while being able to adapt to large variations in the target domain (induced by atmospheric c...

Information Content and Uncertainties in Thermodynamic Profiles and Liquid Cloud Properties Retrieved from the Ground-Based Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI)

The Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI) observes spectrally resolved downwelling radiance emitted by the atmosphere in the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Profiles of temperature and water vapor, and cloud liquid water path and effective radius for a single liquid cloud layer, are retrieved using an optimal estimation–based physical retrieval algorithm from AERI...
